Principal’s Message

Welcome to Short Pump Middle School!

I am beginning my 28th year in middle school— what an awesome place to spend my day!  I sincerely believe grades 6, 7, and 8 are the best three years of a student’s school journey. It is an exciting time where students deliberately test and shape their identities while learning to express their authentic selves. Our staff is honored to help shape students into the scholars, athletes, musicians, performers, and leaders they choose to become!

We begin the 2020- 21 school year focused on providing outstanding instruction and our theme this year, “Learning in Uncharted Waters”, acknowledges that teaching will look very differently than ever before!  There will be many questions throughout the school year.  As final answers are available, I will communicate with you! Our staff is committed to utilizing all available technology to reach and connect with students, so learning can continue uninterrupted.  We also recognize the importance of social and emotional development for middle schoolers.  Students will begin every school day with their advisory teacher as a consistent guide for the entire school year.  This teacher will serve as an anchor for students and families while providing extra support, answers for questions, and a safe harbor when challenges arise.

During the 19-20 school year, our team enlisted the ideas of parents, students, and staff to revise our Vision Statement for our school.  The combined input revealed many similarities of the three groups in our goals for our students.  We are proud to share our new Vision Statement with our community:  We Connect. We Learn. We Grow.

We connect:

  • Knowledge across multiple classes to highlight shared skills between content areas
  • Classroom experiences to real world challenges so students become #lifeready
  • Students and staff through our advisory block to develop social and emotional needs
  • As we acknowledge and listen to each other’s thoughts and ideas
  • Through smiles and laughter
  • While collaborating with others to reach common goals

We learn:

  • Compassion
  • Tolerance
  • Patience
  • Acceptance
  • Empathy
  • Collaboration
  • Critical Thinking
  • Problem solving skills
  • Content knowledge

We grow:

  • Becoming more confident in our knowledge and abilities
  • Owning our learning
  • Recognizing and celebrating our unique strengths and talents
  • Developing independence
  • Demonstrating maturity
  • Being reflective
  • Communicating effectively with others
  • Persisting through challenges
  • Serving others and our larger community

To support the SPMS vision, our staff collectively developed four core values to guide us in our daily interactions with all Pumas.

SPMS Core Values
  • Students First
    • We believe our students are at the core of everything we do!
  • Embrace Community
    • We believe it is imperative to recognize the unique perspectives of all Pumas and practice compassion as we acknowledge the journeys which have brought us together.
  • Bring Your Best
    • We believe personal bests differ for everyone and encourage all Pumas to demonstrate their best efforts every day.
  • Never Stop Learning
    • We believe learning is a life-long commitment through which Pumas seek opportunities to explore new ideas and enhance their skill set.

Welcome aboard to a year of new experiences!  It is a privilege to be a part of your child’s education!  Please check our website or social media accounts for up-to-date information on all the incredible opportunities for our students and school community. Contact us at 360-0800 with any questions. We look forward to sharing middle school with your family!
